What is Tawaf?
Tawaf is the act of circumambulating — walking in circles around — the Kaaba, the sacred cubic structure at the centre of Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. It is one of the most central rituals of both Hajj and Umrah, and is among the most spiritually moving experiences a Muslim can have. The word "tawaf" comes from the Arabic root meaning "to go around."
Tawaf consists of seven complete circuits around the Kaaba, always performed in an anticlockwise direction (i.e., keeping the Kaaba to your left). Each circuit begins and ends at the Black Stone (Al-Hajar al-Aswad), which is embedded in the eastern corner of the Kaaba.
Types of Tawaf in Hajj
- Tawaf al-Qudum — The "arrival" Tawaf performed upon first entering Makkah.
- Tawaf al-Ifadah (Tawaf al-Ziyarah) — A pillar of Hajj performed on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah after returning from Mina.
- Tawaf al-Wada' — The farewell Tawaf performed before leaving Makkah.
Prerequisites Before Beginning Tawaf
- Ritual purity (Wudu): You must be in a state of wudu (ablution). Women who are menstruating or in postnatal bleeding may not perform Tawaf until they are ritually pure.
- Covering the 'Awrah: Your body must be appropriately covered as required in prayer.
- Correct clothing: Men in Ihram wear the two white cloths; women wear their regular modest garments.
- Intention (Niyyah): Make a clear intention in your heart for the specific type of Tawaf you are performing.
Step-by-Step: Performing Tawaf
Step 1 — Approach the Black Stone
Begin at the Black Stone (Al-Hajar al-Aswad). If you are able to reach it, kiss it or touch it with your right hand. If the crowd makes this impossible — which is common — simply face the Black Stone, raise your right hand, and say:
"Bismillahi Allahu Akbar" (In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest).
Step 2 — Begin Circling Anticlockwise
Walk with the Kaaba to your left. Move in a calm, orderly manner. You are not required to rush unless performing the specific Sunnah of Raml (brisk walking) in the first three circuits of Tawaf al-Qudum for men.
Step 3 — Pass the Yemeni Corner
As you pass the Rukn al-Yamani (Yemeni Corner), touch it with your right hand if possible. It is Sunnah to do so, but do not kiss it. Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone, it is recommended to recite:
"Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhab an-nar."
(Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.)
Step 4 — Complete Seven Circuits
Continue for a total of seven circuits. Each time you pass the Black Stone, raise your hand and say "Allahu Akbar." There is no single prescribed supplication for the entire Tawaf — you may make du'a in your own language from the heart, recite Quran, or use any authentic du'a collections.
Step 5 — Pray Two Rak'ahs Behind Maqam Ibrahim
After completing the seven circuits, proceed to Maqam Ibrahim (the Station of Ibrahim) and pray two rak'ahs. It is recommended to recite Surah Al-Kafirun in the first rak'ah and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second. If Maqam Ibrahim is too crowded, you may pray anywhere in the masjid.
Step 6 — Drink from Zamzam
After your two rak'ahs, proceed to drink from the Zamzam water stations. Make du'a while drinking — this is a blessed moment.
Important Notes
- If your wudu breaks during Tawaf, you must renew it and resume from where you left off.
- Do not compete or push aggressively — the outer circles are less crowded and the Tawaf is equally valid.
- Remain focused in remembrance of Allah throughout; avoid idle conversation.
Tawaf is a living symbol of the unity of the Muslim Ummah — millions of hearts circling together in devotion to the One God. Approach it with reverence, patience, and gratitude.
